SWEDENavi is a website that gives Japanese people easy access to information on Sweden and Swedish popular culture in their own language Japanese.
If you are Japanese and are interested in Sweden, it is very difficult to go deep into the culture and learn about Sweden beyond the most mainstream cultural phenomena. The big problem is of course the language. Almost all Japanese do not master much more than a very basic grasp of English, so gathering information in the Japanese language is the only option. Despite this, there is not much information on Sweden available in Japanese. Most of it is provided by government agencies, foundations and large corporations, which make the information superficial and adapted to a larger audience.
We who are working at SWEDENavi want to show a more diverse picture of Sweden and go beyond the common images of Sweden shown at embassies and in tourist brochures. We are both Swedish and Japanese people at SWEDENavi but our idea is to give the Swedish perspective on what the most interesting popular culture is in Sweden right now, rather than trying to adapt to what a Japanese audience might be interested in or like. Therefore we always choose our subjects and write our texts based on our own personal tastes.
At present there are four main categories at SWEDENavi, Art & Design, Music, Stockholm Guide and Enjoy in Tokyo. At Enjoy in Tokyo we write about how you can experience Swedish culture on location in Japan through shops, restaurants and events.
We started SWEDENavi as a logic step forward in a long-lasting love affair with Japan and we see this site as a means to deepen the exchange between Sweden and Japan. We see that the interest for cooperation between Sweden and Japan is increasing year by year, a sign that there is a special cultural bond between our countries, despite the many differences and the great geographical distance.
